Stanley (Tim) Walker Morrison is chairman of both Ayrshire-based independent bottler A. Dewar Rattray and the Clydeside Distillery. He entered the whisky trade in 1960 after completing his training in the distilleries of Arthur Bell and the North British Grain Distillery in Edinburgh.
The family firm, whisky brokerage Stanley P. Morrison, expanded considerably during the next 10 years with the purchase of Bowmore and Glen Garioch distilleries. At the same time, the company increased its involvement in major markets around the world including the US, Japan, Scandinavia, and Europe.
Tim became responsible for the development and marketing of company brands globally, with Bowmore at the forefront. In 1979, during Bowmore’s bicentenary, all the companies within the group were united under the banner of Morrison Bowmore Distillers. Auchentoshan Distillery was purchased in 1982, then in 1988, Suntory acquired a share in Morrison Bowmore Distillers. Tim acted as a non-executive director until 1996 when Suntory consolidated its takeover of the group.
During the early 1990s Tim purchased the majority stake in A. Dewar Rattray, a family company involved in the purchase and warehousing of bulk whisky, creating the opportunity for the selection and bottling of single casks for domestic and export markets. This company has enjoyed success over the last 20 years and is continuing to develop its brands internationally.
The Morrison family’s latest venture, the Clydeside Distillery, opened in the pump house at Queen’s Dock in Glasgow in November 2017 following a three-year restoration project. Its first single malt whisky, Stobcross, launched in October 2021.
Tim has a passion for the preservation of Scotch whisky heritage for the benefit of future generations, who he actively encourages to join the industry. In 1990, he formed the Scotland based Stanley Morrison Charitable Trust, of which he is chairman. The trust’s principal objective is the education of people within the spirits industry and the continuing development of youth in sport and the arts. Since its foundation, the trust has made donations of more than £1 million to these causes.
